Leningrad, Kursk and Smolensk NPPs ahead of schedule fulfilled the plan for cobalt-60

In 2025, the production of the isotope reached 111% of the plan, providing for the needs of medicine and industry

Leningrad, Kursk and Smolensk NPPs (branches of Rosenergoatom Concern JSC) in 2025 ahead of schedule fulfilled the annual plan for the production and shipment of cobalt-60, reaching 111% of the plan.

Cobalt-60 is used for sterilization of medical devices, extending the shelf life and disinfection of food products, as well as for modifying polymers and solving some environmental problems.

High performance is ensured by the well-established process of isotope production, stable operation of RBMK-1000 power units and the qualifications of NPP personnel and specialized services of Rosenergoatom. The Concern covers 30% of the global market for sterilization cobalt-60 and is expanding the production of other isotopes for nuclear medicine.

The production of cobalt-60 at RBMK-1000 allows, in parallel with electricity generation, to produce industrial-scale products without affecting safety and generation. Leningrad NPP produces general industrial and medical isotopes, and also conducts nuclear doping of silicon. Kursk and Smolensk NPPs are increasing the production of cobalt-60 and other isotopes.

In 2025, LAES ahead of schedule formed and sent batches of cobalt-60, fulfilled plans for iodine-131 and samarium-153, continued the production of molybdenum-99 and conducted test batches of lutetium-177. The production of doped silicon has been completed and is ready for shipment. Expanding production at Kursk and Smolensk NPPs will increase the volume of radiopharmaceuticals and allow the production of new medical isotopes.
