Unique Gigafactories for Lithium-Ion Batteries are Being Built in Russia

Scientists Discuss the Future of Energy and New Technologies at the V Congress of Young Scientists in "Sirius"

Three large factories for the production of lithium-ion batteries are being built in Russia. This was announced at the V Congress of Young Scientists in "Sirius" by the Head of the Department of Electrochemistry of the Faculty of Chemistry of Moscow State University, Academician Evgeny Antipov.

The session "Energy: Present and Future" discussed innovative technologies for the generation, storage, and conversion of energy, as well as digital transformation in the energy sector. During the discussion, Evgeny Antipov noted that energy storage technologies are developing extremely rapidly. Lithium-ion batteries are becoming the basis of a new industrial revolution.

Currently, three gigafactories for the production of lithium-ion batteries are being built in Russia at once. These are the productions of Rosatom and Sber. The capacity of batteries is also constantly growing, they already surpass standard lead-acid counterparts by an order of magnitude. But there are many problems with batteries that need to be solved. And the solution can become a point of growth, so their potential is enormous.

According to him, a separate battery industry may appear in Russia. He said that developments are underway for the production of sodium-ion batteries. This type of battery is cheaper and does not have the problems of lithium-ion devices.

It is necessary to invest in scientific developments related to this field of knowledge in order to reach the level of technological sovereignty and world-class industry.

"The First Technical" is an industry information partner of the V Congress of Young Scientists, which takes place from November 26 to 28, 2025 on the federal territory of "Sirius". This is the central event of the Decade of Science and Technology in Russia.
