Scientist: Creating a "magic pill" for aging is unlikely

The use of artificial intelligence technologies and gene editing can help increase human life expectancy up to 150 years. Daria Podchinyonova, Deputy Director of the Institute of Medicine and Medical Technologies of Novosibirsk State University (NSU), is confident of this. In her opinion, however, the creation of a "magic pill" to achieve longevity cannot be considered realistic.

There is an assumption that a person cannot live more than 125-127 years, which is associated with a limited number of cell divisions. However, biotechnology and AI can come to our aid: personalized medicine using AI, possible gene editing in the future.

According to her, there are several theories explaining the aging process and its causes. One of them states that aging is associated with the shortening of telomeres — the ends of chromosomes, which leads to a decrease in the regenerative capacity of cells. There is also a hypothesis about chronic inflammation and the accumulation of free radicals, which negatively affect health, as well as about sarcopenia — the loss of muscle activity.

In this regard, it is unlikely that it will be possible to significantly influence the aging process with the help of a single drug containing any biologically active substance. At the same time, scientific data confirm that natural bioactive compounds present in plant products really have a beneficial effect on the body.

She noted that although the aging process is quite complex, doctors and scientists already have methods to slow it down. These methods include a balanced diet and an active lifestyle. At the moment, there is no "magic pill" for aging, but the combination of scientific knowledge and preventive measures opens up prospects for improving both the duration and quality of life.
