Face Instead of Card: St. Petersburg Metro to Accept Biometric Payments from 2026

The system is already undergoing pilot testing

From the beginning of 2026, passengers of the St. Petersburg Metro will be able to pay for their rides using biometric data. The project is being implemented jointly with the Ministry of Digital Development of Russia and the Center for Biometric Technologies.

It will be possible to pay for travel using biometrics at all stations of the St. Petersburg Metro. A decision has been made on close interaction between the parties within the framework of the project implementation and the full launch of the system in the St. Petersburg Metro in early 2026.

The Chairman of the Committee for Transport of St. Petersburg, Valentin Enokaev, clarified that pilot tests of the new system are already underway at four stations: \"Ploschad Vosstaniya,\" \"Gostiny Dvor,\" \"Novocherkasskaya,\" and \"Primorskaya.\"

As part of the testing, specialists conducted the necessary technical measurements — illumination, color rendering, and the throughput of turnstiles during peak hours. The checks confirmed the convenience and safety of the technology for passengers.
