AvtoVAZ presented a 1.8-liter VAZ-11184 engine for Niva

The new engine with a belt-driven timing belt protects the valves if the belt breaks

AvtoVAZ has introduced a 1.8-liter VAZ-11184 engine that will replace the 1.7 chain engine on Niva models. The main feature of the new unit is its safe design: if the timing belt breaks, the valves do not bend, which reduces the risk of serious damage.

Previously, the timing chain was considered more reliable, but the plant's engineers switched to a belt drive.

According to AvtoVAZ representative Stanislav Bereziy, the engine is designed with a non-interference scheme: the pistons have special recesses that allow the valves to complete their full stroke without colliding with the pistons. "In fact, the engine is indestructible," Bereziy emphasized during the Niva Travel test drive.

The presentation also notes that the new connecting rod and piston group completely eliminates the risk of engine damage in the event of an "emergency" belt break. This means that owners will be able to operate vehicles with minimal concern for costly repairs.
