Crews of Two Ships Stranded in Ice Rescued by Mi-8 Helicopter of "Polar Airlines"

The ships "Zaliv" and "Bykov Mys" were trapped in ice due to a sudden cold snap

A Mi-8 helicopter of "Polar Airlines" rescued the crews of two ships stranded in the ice of the Lena River. The ships "Zaliv" and "Bykov Mys" found themselves in an icy trap due to a sharp cold snap that instantly bound the water with ice. Ten crew members were cut off from the shore.

Upon a signal from the Yakutia Rescue Service, the helicopter took off from Tiksi, heading north. Bad weather did not become an obstacle: the Mi-8, despite the frost, wind, and ice hummocks, confidently performed its task. Rescuers evacuated the sailors and safely returned them to Tiksi.

Mi-8 is a Soviet twin-engine multi-purpose helicopter developed by the Mikhail Leontyevich Mil design bureau in the early 1960s.
