AI System Developed to Detect Depression Through Gait

Scientists from a joint Russian-Chinese university have presented an innovative solution for the early diagnosis of the ailment

Scientists from the joint Russian-Chinese university MSU-PPI in Shenzhen have developed a system that uses artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to identify signs of chronic depression based on gait characteristics. This was announced at the BRICS+ Open Science Week by Dmitry Shtarev, Head of the Department of Science and Research at the university.

The system reads the characteristics of a person's gait and compares them with a database of signs that may indicate psychoemotional disorders, including chronic depression. According to Shtarev, the accuracy of the assessment achieved with AI exceeds 80%.

Although such an AI model does not replace a doctor, it allows timely detection of changes in behavior that indicate possible diseases, the scientist clarified. The development is being tested in eight hospitals located in Beijing, Shenzhen, and Guangzhou.

In the future, this solution can be used in enterprises for background analysis of the condition of employees, on which both the quality of products and compliance with the safety rules established in production depend.

The MSU-PPI University in Shenzhen is an initiative implemented in cooperation with the city government, the Beijing Polytechnic Institute, and Moscow State University named after M. V. Lomonosov. It is the first joint university in history founded by China and Russia.
