The automatic extension of driver's licenses, established in Russia in 2022, will end on January 1, 2026. This was announced by Turgunboy Zokirov, Assistant of the Department of Administrative Law of the Kutafin Moscow State Law University (MSAL).
It is envisaged to extend for three years the Russian national driver's licenses that expire (have expired) in the period from January 1, 2022 to December 31, 2025. If the driver's license expires, for example, on December 31, 2025, it will be valid until December 30, 2028. But if the license expires on January 1, 2026, there will be no automatic extension.
Drivers who have already used the auto-renewal once were advised to find out the date from which the license should be considered invalid.
With auto-renewal, owners can continue to use their old licenses, but they must be replaced if the license becomes unusable, personal data changes, or other circumstances occur.
You can replace your license in advance. However, it is important not to drive a car with an expired license. This may result in a fine of 5 to 15 thousand rubles and the evacuation of the vehicle.
The validity period of a driver's license without auto-renewal is 10 years.
