According to Baijiahao, the Chinese military was amazed by the high quality and outstanding characteristics of the Russian Project 877 "Paltus" submarines after they entered service with China.
The submarine turned out to be extremely easy to operate, and it was also unexpectedly quiet compared to Chinese ships.
As the publication notes, China faced the need to create means to combat American submarines, including silent submarines. In this regard, it was decided to purchase such vessels abroad. After a thorough analysis of various proposals, the Russian Project 877 "Paltus" was selected.
It is noted that the Chinese military, finding themselves on a Russian submarine, were shocked, as pessimistic expectations from the submarine were not justified.
Project 877 "Paltus" submarines (NATO classification: Kilo) are a series of Soviet and Russian diesel-electric submarines built in 1982–2000.
Technical characteristics of Project 877 "Paltus":
- Speed: surface — 10 knots, submerged — 17–19 knots.
- Operating depth: 240 m, maximum — 300 m.
- Navigation autonomy: 45 days.
- Crew: 57 people, including 12 officers.
- Displacement: surface — 2300 (2350) tons, submerged — 3040 (3100) tons.
- Length: greatest — 72.6 (73.8) m.
- Hull width: 9.9 m.
- Average draft: 6.2 m.
- Propulsion: diesel-electric with full electric propulsion.
- Armament: mine-torpedo — 6 bow torpedo tubes of 533 mm caliber, missile — RK "Caliber", "Club-S" (modification 08773).
