Installation of the "Steel Heart" of the BREST-OD-300 Reactor Completed in Seversk

A 400-ton lifting beam was specially designed and manufactured to perform this operation

The most important stage in the construction of the fourth-generation Pilot Demonstration Energy Complex (ODEC) has been completed in Seversk. The metal shell of the central cavity of the BREST-OD-300 reactor plant has been installed in its design position at the construction site.

The heart of the new reactor will be a giant structure weighing over 140 tons. Inside this structure, which is more than 14 meters high and about 8 meters in diameter, will house the core with advanced SNUP fuel and control systems. The structure was manufactured at Rosatom enterprises in Elektrostal, and delivered to Siberia via the Northern Sea Route.

After the installation of the central cavity shell, we plan to proceed with the installation of four peripheral cavity shells, where steam generators and circulation pumps will be located. Together, all the metal shells form a lead coolant circulation circuit. The space between the cavities will be gradually filled with a special heat-resistant concrete, which performs the function of radiation and thermal protection and ensures the structural strength of the boundary of the first coolant circuit.

At the site, using a powerful crawler crane, the shell was lifted to a height comparable to a nine-story building and precisely installed in the reactor shaft. A 400-ton lifting beam was specially designed and manufactured to perform this unique operation, Rosatom reported.

Earlier, www1.ru reported that a "Molten Fuel Trap" was delivered to the construction site of Power Unit No. 3 with a VVER-1200 reactor at the Leningrad NPP-2.
