Rosatom specialists are the first in the world to create a method for the simultaneous extraction of platinum group metals from solutions formed during the processing of spent nuclear fuel (SNF). According to the state corporation's press service, the use of this technology will improve the environmental safety of the vitrification process of high-level waste (HLW) and significantly extend the service life of equipment.

Scientists at the V. G. Khlopin Radium Institute, which is part of Rosatom's scientific division, have developed an innovative method for the simultaneous extraction of platinum group metals from radioactive nuclear fuel waste. A specially selected reagent allows extracting three such metals at once: ruthenium, rhodium, and palladium. Previously, as noted in the Rosatom press release, the simultaneous extraction of these platinum metals was considered impossible. The introduction of the new technology will improve the production process, making it safer and more environmentally friendly.
