Restorers restore a 17th-century cannon raised from the bottom of the Vyborg Bay

The weapon was transferred to the Museum of the History of Shlisselburg

Restoration of a 17th-century cannon raised from the bottom of the Vyborg Bay has begun in Vyborg. This was announced by Governor Alexander Drozdenko.

Vyborg Bay, where the cannon was raised from

The artifact was delivered to the Museum of the History of Shlisselburg in a badly damaged condition: corrosion concealed the shape and decor of the weapon. Specialists carried out restoration work, as a result of which inscriptions appeared on the surface: «Pishchal… length 2 arshins without 6 vershoks…».

The governor said that a master's mark was also found during cleaning — an image of a cross in the grass. According to this mark, experts attributed the cannon to the master Voin Loginov (1620–1655).

The reasons and time the weapon ended up at the bottom of the bay have not yet been established; historians continue to research.
