Roscosmos cosmonaut squad commander Oleg Kononenko outlined important directions in the development of Russian manned cosmonautics. According to him, the creation of a new orbital station and a new transport ship — are a priority.
He recalled that the International Space Station (ISS) is gradually completing its service life. Kononenko added that its deorbiting will occur in the next ten years.
Russia needs to develop a new station to avoid interruptions in manned flights and continue working on technologies for future interplanetary missions.
According to him, we still need to stay in low orbit around the Earth in order to develop technologies for future interplanetary flights.
Oleg Kononenko also compared the Russian Soyuz spacecraft with Elon Musk's developments. The cosmonaut noted that although the domestic ship may look outdated, it is being modernized and meets the necessary requirements.
