President of Russia Vladimir Putin signed a decree that defines a plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. By 2035, the level of emissions should be 65−67% of the 1990 figures. This is an important step in the fight against climate change.
The decree emphasizes that the reduction in emissions should not occur at the expense of the maximum absorbing capacity of forests and other natural ecosystems. It is important that this happens in conditions of sustainable and balanced socio-economic development of the country. It is also necessary to ensure non-discriminatory access to technologies and equipment that will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase their absorption.
The decree comes into force from the moment of its official publication. In matters of ecology and climate change, the instruments of nuclear and hydropower, as well as increasing the absorbing capacity of forests, will be involved.
It is also planned to increase forest areas and introduce environmentally friendly technologies in industry.
