New technology for the production of ceramic powder for endoprostheses developed by NSTU NETI scientists

Novosibirsk researchers have developed a method for synthesizing high-quality α-Al₂O₃ powder from Russian raw materials

Scientists from Novosibirsk State Technical University (NSTU NETI), as part of the NTI NGU Center consortium, have presented a technology for the production of ceramic powder for medical implants. The development is being carried out under the leadership of Sergey Veselov, Head of the Laboratory of Ceramic and Metal-Ceramic Materials.

The process of creating ceramic powder

Ceramics based on aluminum oxide (α-Al₂O₃) and zirconium dioxide are used in joint endoprostheses, especially hip and knee joints. Such implants last up to 20 years, surpassing metal counterparts in wear resistance and biocompatibility. Currently, the main suppliers of such materials are Japan, Switzerland, and Germany. Russia is dependent on imports, so the task of scientists is to create a complete production cycle, from raw materials to finished products.

The pilot samples of α-Al₂O₃ powder meet international standards: purity over 99.5%, particle size less than 0.5 μm, the proportion of the target phase is more than 99%. The technology allows controlling the properties of the material, which is important for the manufacture of durable and long-lasting implants.

The patenting process is currently underway, as well as the search for industrial partners to implement the development. The success of the project will reduce Russia's dependence on foreign supplies and open up new opportunities in medical technologies.
