«Look, that's you in the photo!» — scammers send the Mamont virus via SMS

Opening such a message can infect your device with a virus

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia has recorded a mass distribution of the Mamont virus, spread via SMS messages with suspicious links.

The fraudsters send .apk files (installation files for Android) to the victims, disguising them as photos or videos, allegedly with an image of the recipient. The messages are accompanied by phrases like: «Is that you in the video?» or «Look, that's you in the photo!».

Opening such messages can lead to device infection, data leakage, and loss of access to accounts.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs recommends ignoring such SMS messages and under no circumstances downloading attachments, even if the message comes from a familiar number.
