Атака из ближнего космоса: почему ракеты «Искандер-М» невозможно сбить?

Warheads soar upwards sharply before striking and dive on the target

Ballistic missiles of the Iskander-M operational-tactical complex cannot be shot down by modern air defense (AD) systems, explained military expert Vladimir Yeranosyan, Associate Professor at the Financial University.

According to him, the missiles of the Iskander-M system attack from a height of 100 km, that is, in fact, from the limits of near space. At the moment of diving on the target, it is impossible to stop them.

The difference between the Iskander with the indices "M" and "K" is that the first attacks from a high altitude, and the second goes to the target at a low altitude, following the terrain, only before the strike it soars up and strikes from there.

The specialist added that both missiles have warheads with a mass of 500 kg in high-explosive, cluster and concrete-piercing versions.

At the same time, complexes with the index "M" are more often used with high-explosive and concrete-piercing warheads to destroy bunkers at great depths, and "K" — with cluster warheads. The range of the Iskander is up to 500 km.
