Russian military personnel have been supplied with Izh-27 smooth-bore guns with a vertical arrangement of barrels, manufactured by the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant (IMZ, part of the Kalashnikov concern of Rostec), to combat kamikaze drones.
The company recalled that the IZH-27 smooth-bore hunting rifle went into series production in 1973, was produced for over forty years, and became the most mass-produced in the country — over 1.5 million rifles of all modifications were manufactured.
The most popular caliber for it is 12×76 (for a barrel diameter of 18.4 mm), there are also 20th caliber (also for a 76 mm cartridge) and 16th caliber (for a 70 mm cartridge).
Due to the fact that the IZH-27 has no moving parts, the receiver is significantly shorter than that of self-loading models, such as the MR-155.
Also, the vertical gun is superior to self-loading guns in power, as it does not expend energy on the operation of automation, but it is inferior in rate of fire. However, according to experienced "drone fighters", a good shooter only needs two shots to shoot down a flying FPV drone.
Earlier www1.ru reported that Tula defense enterprises have increased shipments by 50% since the beginning of 2025.
