The Russian government has approved new rules regarding giving way to emergency vehicles on the roads. Now, drivers are required to change lanes to clear the way for vehicles with flashing lights. The decree was signed by Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin on July 16.
According to the Ministry of Transport, the new rules clarify how drivers should act when encountering emergency vehicles. At the same time, no new categories of vehicles with flashing lights are introduced, and no additional advantages are provided for such vehicles.
Previously, the traffic regulations did not have clear instructions on how exactly drivers should give way to emergency vehicles, which sometimes led to dangerous situations. Now, drivers must either change to the adjacent lane or, if possible, pull over to the side of the road. If the driver performs this maneuver, they will not be held administratively liable. If the emergency vehicle is moving in the adjacent lane, it is enough to simply not obstruct it.
The Ministry of Transport emphasizes that the new rules are aimed at preventing unjustified failure to give way to emergency vehicles and reducing claims against drivers.
