Maxim Kadakov, editor-in-chief of "Za Rulem", described in detail in the video about the updated Niva Travel SUV. The car received a long-awaited replacement for the outdated VAZ-21214 engine. The new VAZ-11184 power unit, despite a modest increase in power (+7 hp), demonstrates significant improvements in torque and fuel efficiency.
A huge amount of work has been done, but only plus 7 hp. VAZ did this in order not to exceed the tax-efficient 90 hp. Because the plant pays excise duty on engines with higher power, and the excise duty is included in the cost and in the final price of the car.
The basis of the new engine was the VAZ-11193 block, unified with front-wheel drive Lada models, and the 8-valve cylinder head from VAZ-11182.
Key changes to the new unit:
- Torque: 153 N·m versus 129 N·m for its predecessor, and from 1000 rpm, a torque comparable to the maximum of the old engine is available.
- Efficiency: the declared consumption is reduced to 10 l/100 km.
- Tax optimization: 90 hp is the upper limit to avoid excise duty, which, according to engineers, kept the car's price from rising.
VAZ employees say: we don’t want our people to pay more for the car. But, since the designers "squeezed" in power, they managed to play with torque and fundamentally change its characteristics. <...> The maximum torque of the new engine is 153 Nm versus the previous 129 Nm. The difference is actually big – and in theory, with this engine, the car should drive very confidently. You can use the fifth gear more often, feel more confident at low revs, at which you would have previously tucked in a lower gear.
The serial production of Niva Travel with the new engine will begin in the IV quarter of 2025, and the surcharge for the upgrade will be from 50 to 160 thousand rubles, depending on the configuration.
