A small nuclear power plant (SNPP) will begin operating in the Ust-Yansky district of Yakutia by 2031. The project is being implemented within the framework of the Far Eastern concession model and will be the first such facility in Russia. Engineering surveys, seismic and geo-monitoring work will begin in 2024, and the first concrete is scheduled to be poured by 2027.
The station will be built on the basis of the RITM-200N reactor unit, designed for many years of operation without refueling. It is adapted to the extreme climatic and seismic conditions of the Arctic.
The SNPP will cover the needs of the Kyuchus gold ore deposit and settlements of the Ust-Yansky district. The project has passed all the necessary examinations, including environmental and ethnological ones, taking into account the opinion of the indigenous peoples of the North.
It is expected that the project will give impetus to the socio-economic development of the region, create hundreds of jobs, reduce electricity tariffs, reduce CO₂ emissions and improve transport infrastructure.
