Muscovites will be able to ride a driverless tram as early as this year. This was announced by Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport Maxim Liksutov at a press conference. In September-October 2025, the tram will start carrying passengers.
According to Liksutov, a person without a driver's license may be in the driver's seat.
The person will monitor the operation of the systems and, most likely, will not interfere in the process.
The official also shared the authorities' plans for the development of driverless transport in the capital. By 2030, the goal is to make about 40% of the tram network driverless, and by 2035 to bring this figure to 90%.
The Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport emphasized that the first driverless tram has already traveled more than 6,000 km through the streets of the city. It did not violate a single traffic rule. Now this tram runs along the route from Kulakova Street to Shchukinskaya metro station in the north-west of Moscow.
In December 2025, it is planned to begin testing a driverless metro train, which will be able to carry passengers from the end of 2026. The main goal of the project was not only to introduce driverless control, but also to achieve high accuracy in adhering to the train schedule, exceeding 99.99%, with traffic intervals of 60-90 seconds.
