Нейро-архивариус Яндекса расшифровал тысячи исторических документов из архивов Северной Осетии

Among them are search and metric books of Orthodox churches, as well as civil status records

Documents from the Central State Archive of the Republic of North Ossetia — Alania are now available in Yandex's "Archive Search". The new service is designed to help users find information about their ancestors.

With the help of Yandex's neural networks, archival records covering 58 thousand handwritten sheets from the "Churches and Communities of the Terek Region" fund for the period from 1837 to 1927 were deciphered. They contain search and metric books of Orthodox churches, as well as records of births, marriages, and deaths of representatives of various faiths, including Old Believers, Baptists, Catholics, Jews, and Muslims.

The service now includes cases from the fund of the Vladikavkaz District Police Department, which include family lists of villages from more than 20 settlements located in the territory of North Ossetia, Chechnya, and the Stavropol Territory. All documents are already available for full-text search.

According to Yandex representatives, the new tool will allow users to find information about various people, including historical figures who lived in the Terek region in the 19th and early 20th centuries. This period was important for the history of the North Caucasus, when the paths of Cossacks, indigenous peoples, and migrants from different parts of Russia and Europe crossed here. The region became a crossroads of cultures and religions, where Orthodox parishes, mosques, Old Believer and Baptist communities, as well as synagogues coexisted.

"Archive Search" is a Yandex service that helps to find mentions of people, settlements, and events in handwritten documents of the 18th–20th centuries deciphered by a neural network. The service database contains almost 20 million pages of historical documents from archives of various regions of Russia, as well as from diocesan records and other sources.
