«Be careful»: fraudsters started calling Russians from «car services»

The Federation Council urged to ignore calls asking to transfer money for a necessary part

Owners who have given their cars to a car service for repair should ignore calls asking to transfer money for a necessary part. This was warned by Artem Sheikin, Deputy Chairman of the Council for the Development of the Digital Economy under the Federation Council.

Fraudsters, having gained access to customer information, call the service center, posing as vehicle owners. They find out what parts are needed and what their cost is. After that, posing as employees of the service center, fraudsters contact customers and demand immediate payment for the part.

Never transfer money over the phone, even if the person on the other end of the line sounds convincing. Payment must be official, and not by card number dictated in a hurry. Be careful.

Sheikin noted that payment for parts and services of car services should be made only through the cash desk, website, application or account of a legal entity with details. He stressed that transfers «to the master's card» or «quickly and conveniently by phone number» are unacceptable.

Before making a payment, you must request an invoice, act or at least a message from the support service. This is not just a formality, it is your guarantee of security. If a support representative calls you with a request to transfer funds, do not rush. Put the phone down and dial the service number yourself, he advised.

Sheikin added that you need to immediately contact the bank and the police if the money was still transferred to fraudsters. He also recommends reporting the incident to the car service to check the security of the database.
