Производство электроэнергии в России сократилось: выработка в январе-мае снизилась на 1,8%

Hydroelectric power plants reduced electricity generation the most

In January–May 2025, electricity generation in Russia decreased by 1.8% compared to the same period last year, down to 514 billion kWh, according to Rosstat.

In May, output amounted to 91.7 billion kWh, which is 0.9% lower than the level of May 2024 and 4.5% less than in April 2025.

The main decrease was provided by hydroelectric power plants, whose output decreased by 11.9% since the beginning of the year and by 10.9% in May. This is due to a decrease in inflow into the reservoirs of the Angara-Yenisei cascade of hydroelectric power plants. Nuclear power plants produced 86.4 billion kWh, which is 2.8% less than a year earlier, partly due to the decommissioning of the second unit of the Kursk NPP.

At the same time, thermal power plants increased production by 1.3% — despite the relatively warm winter in the European part of the country.

The production of steam and hot water decreased by 5.4% over five months, to 656 million Gcal. The installed capacity of Russian power plants at the beginning of 2025 amounted to about 270 GW. At the end of 2024, electricity generation increased by 2.4%, reaching 1.2 trillion kWh, and heat generation amounted to 1.3 billion Gcal (+0.6%).
