Без связи не оставят: «Ростелеком» запускает VoWiFi в 13 регионах России

New technology allows making calls and sending SMS via Wi-Fi

Rostelecom has announced the launch of the new Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi) technology. It is available to subscribers in 13 regions of Russia. Users can make and receive voice calls, as well as send SMS in areas where mobile communication is absent or limited, but there is access to Wi-Fi.

VoWiFi is already working in Voronezh, Irkutsk, Novosibirsk, Penza, Sakhalin, Tomsk, Ulyanovsk and Chelyabinsk regions, as well as in the republics of Adygea, Buryatia and Tyva, and in the Altai and Stavropol Territories.

The press service of Rostelecom noted that the new technology is especially useful for residents of the upper floors of buildings and densely built-up areas, where cellular communication may be unstable. VoWiFi will also help to stay connected in situations where the mobile network is temporarily unavailable.

The VoWiFi service is provided free of charge and is activated automatically. Calls using this technology are charged as regular voice calls, while the mobile internet package is not consumed. In the future, it is planned to expand the availability of VoWiFi for subscribers in all regions where the operator operates.

The technology is supported on most modern smartphones with the Android operating system. To use VoWiFi, users need to enable the "Calls over Wi-Fi" function in the settings of the phone and connect to a Wi-Fi network with internet access. When leaving the coverage area of Wi-Fi, the phone will automatically switch to the mobile network, if no restrictions are set. However, it is worth noting that VoWiFi support on iOS devices is not yet available.
