Unique Project of Russian Nuclear Scientists Under Threat: Attack on Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant in Iran Could Become a Catastrophe

An attack on the Iranian Bushehr nuclear power plant could lead to a large-scale disaster, according to Alexey Likhachev, head of Rosatom.

Due to possible threats, Rosatom has already evacuated some of its employees from the station. The state corporation does not rule out a complete evacuation of personnel.

Construction of the Iranian Bushehr nuclear power plant began in 1975 but was suspended. In 1992, the governments of Russia and Iran signed an agreement to continue the project. The first power unit was connected to the grid in September 2011, and it began operations in June 2013.

In 2014, Russia and Iran signed an agreement to build two new power units with a capacity of 2.1 thousand MW. The construction of the second unit is expected to be completed in 2026, and the third in 2027.

Earlier, www1.ru reported that Rosatom will install a melt localization device on the second power unit of the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant.
