Record-breaker Among Kerosene-Oxygen Engines: Roscosmos Creates New RD0124MS Power Plant for Soyuz-5 Rocket

Engine thrust — 60 tons

The Chemical Automatics Design Bureau (part of NPO Energomash Roscosmos) has completed the manufacture of a RD0124MS engine for flight tests. It will be used as part of The engine is intended for use as part of the promising Soyuz-5 rocket. This was reported by the press service of the state corporation.

The engine was developed entirely in a digital environment. It runs on «naphthyl + liquid oxygen» components.

RD0124MS is a record-breaker among kerosene-oxygen engines. Its thrust is 60 tons, and its specific impulse is 361 units.

The power plant consists of two blocks with a diagonal arrangement of combustion chambers. This allows the engine to continue operating even if one of the blocks is turned off.

The Soyuz-5 launch vehicle is a promising medium-class design capable of launching up to 17 tons of payload into low Earth orbit.

In March of this year, the Progress Rocket and Space Center sent a prototype of the first stage of the Soyuz-5 to the Scientific Testing Center of the Rocket and Space Industry for bench tests. These tests are an important stage in preparation for the first launch of the rocket, which is scheduled for the end of this year from the Baikonur Cosmodrome.

Earlier www1.ru reported that the orbital grouping of Russia continues to develop.
