Kaspersky experts have discovered a fake KeePass password manager. Attackers used it to steal user data, the Department for Combating Illegal Use of Information and Communication Technologies of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation warned.

Attackers often try to slip malware to the user along with useful programs. Kaspersky experts have recorded the distribution of a fake KeePass password manager. The modified version of the application was distributed through fake websites from at least mid-2024 to the present.

Law enforcement officials reported that a vulnerability was discovered in the program, which was supposed to protect user data. It consisted in the fact that passwords from the database were stored in unencrypted form, which allowed attackers to gain access to accounts.

To avoid using a fake password manager, you need to check the site from which you download the application, the department emphasized.

Earlier it became known that fraudsters are using artificial intelligence to create fake nude photos of Russians to blackmail them and extort money. The average ransom amount reaches 40 thousand rubles. Sometimes blackmailers demand to take out a loan if the victim does not have the required amount, the bank said.
