Russian banks are recording an increase in fraud cases involving loyalty programs

Russian banks are recording an increase in cashback fraud cases — fraudsters are organizing schemes with fictitious purchases, promising clients easy income.

The money is returned either through transfers or through retail outlets with fake MCC codes. After the cashback is credited, part of the amount is transferred to the organizers. Such schemes are most active in banks with generous loyalty programs, especially in VTB, where you can get up to 30 thousand rubles for certain transactions.

Against this background, VTB has started calling clients for "conversations" in the office — especially those who earn large sums in cashback on the "Privilege" package. The bank believes that some clients are abusing the program, causing it losses. Clients are asked to voluntarily return the amounts received.

At the same time, VTB has limited a previously available loophole — cashing out funds via QR from a credit account is now subject to a commission, albeit with the preservation of the grace period.

The bank does not comment on the mass mailing of "invitations", but clients publish screenshots of messages from VTB. Banks in general remind: cashback is only due for real purchases, and participation in such schemes can lead to blocking of cards, return of bonuses and разбирательствам with supervisory authorities.
