An expedition of Chelyabinsk State University, led by Rector Sergei Taskaev, recorded traces of a meteorite fall in the area of the village of Sultanovo, Chelyabinsk region.
Scientists have discovered dust of meteoritic origin, localized in one area. A comprehensive set of laboratory analyzes confirmed its extraterrestrial nature. According to the rector, the samples contain olivines, pyroxenes and metal alloys based on iron. The particles form agglomerates.
The study showed that the dust consists of materials characteristic of stony meteorites. Such objects are most often destroyed when entering the atmosphere, falling out in the form of a meteor shower.
Taskaev noted that a preliminary analysis was carried out using optical and electron microscopy. Energy-dispersive spectroscopy was also used, which made it possible to establish the morphology and chemical composition of the particles.
According to the results of the study, CSU specialists localized the alleged place of the fall. A new expedition is planned in the near future to search for large fragments of the meteorite.
