The concreting of the second tier of the inner containment shell (ICS) of the reactor building has been completed at the site of the second power unit of the El Dabaa NPP in Egypt. The work, carried out by Rosatom's engineering division, took 24 hours and was completed ahead of schedule.
The ICS is a cylindrical structure made of 12 pre-fabricated "petal" sections weighing up to 90 tons each. It is designed to protect the reactor and primary circuit equipment.
Four concrete distribution booms and 65 specialists were used to pour 1,000 cubic meters of concrete. The second tier raised the structure to an elevation of +20.150 meters.
The El Dabaa NPP will be Egypt's first nuclear power plant. The four power units, with a capacity of 1200 MW each, will be equipped with VVER-1200 generation "3+" reactors with advanced safety systems. The plant is being built 300 km from Cairo on the Mediterranean coast. The 2017 contract obliges Russia not only to build the NPP, but also to supply fuel, train personnel and create an infrastructure for storing spent materials.
The El Dabaa project will reduce Egypt's dependence on hydrocarbons, providing 10% of the country's energy consumption. The VVER-1200 reactors, already tested at the Leningrad and Novovoronezh NPPs, meet post-Fukushima safety standards. Successful implementation strengthens Rosatom's position as a leader in nuclear energy and opens up new opportunities for exporting Russian technologies to Africa and the Middle East.
