Detailed photographs of debris from the 40N6 extra-long-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) with a range of up to 300 km have appeared online. The images were published by military analyst Evgeny Damantsev.
The munition is used in the S-400 Triumph surface-to-air missile system. The 40N6 is capable of shooting down even over-the-horizon targets.
New Missile
The 40N6 is an extra-long-range SAM designed to engage strategic bombers, AWACS and EW aircraft, airborne command posts, and hypersonic ballistic and cruise missiles.
According to official data, the engagement range is up to 380 km for aerodynamic targets and up to 15 km for ballistic targets, the average flight speed is 1190 m/s, and the altitude is from 10 m to 35 km. Thanks to its new homing head, the 40N6 can destroy aircraft beyond the radio visibility of ground-based radars.
The missile was developed by MKB Fakel, and serial production is carried out by MMZ Avangard. The surface-to-air missiles previously in service with the S-400 complex (9M96, 48N6, 48N6DM) provided target engagement at a range of up to 250 km.
