President of AvtoVAZ Maxim Sokolov explained why the company uses Chinese gearboxes for its cars. According to him, Chinese suppliers offer high quality and are able to provide the necessary production volumes.
According to him, AvtoVAZ is ready to switch to Russian components as soon as domestic manufacturers can guarantee stable quality and sufficient volumes.
Previously, AvtoVAZ used Chinese CVTs, and now Chinese manual gearboxes are appearing in the LADA Vesta and Iskra model lines. The top configurations of these cars are equipped with either a 6-speed manual or a CVT supplied by the Chinese concern WanLiYang.
Director of product programs and projects of AvtoVAZ Oleg Grunenkov previously explained that the creation of a domestic automatic transmission is impractical due to the lack of relevant development in Russia. In his opinion, the project may take 5–7 years, which makes it economically unprofitable in the context of available Chinese solutions.
