«Nornickel» Implements UAVs for Monitoring Hydraulic Structures

Video surveillance and thermal imaging are used in the Arctic to monitor pipelines and dams

The «Nornickel» company has begun to actively use unmanned aerial vehicles to monitor the condition of its hydraulic structures in the Far North. In winter, specialists from the Polar Division use video surveillance and thermal imaging to monitor dams and pipelines.

Ensuring the safety of production assets is our responsibility to both the company and the city.
Vladislav Chulanov, Head of the Security Monitoring Department

According to him, this type of survey allows identifying flows of tailings pulp and concentrates, which is difficult to do during a regular inspection. New technologies greatly simplify the observation process and increase its accuracy, however, traditional methods are also used and remain an important part of the work.

With the help of drones, company specialists conduct video shooting in warm weather and create digital models to predict the reactions of hydraulic structures to changes in water level and temperature. Data from drones is uploaded to a digital platform that helps identify potential problems at an early stage and reduce risks.

New technologies are being used at the Talnakh Concentrator and the Nadezhda Metallurgical Plant.
