Rosatom Prepares to Build Unit 5 in the Sverdlovsk Region

The construction project for Unit 5 of the Beloyarsk Nuclear Power Plant in the Sverdlovsk Region has received a positive conclusion from the state expert review. This means that preparatory work can now begin at the construction site. The documentation was approved by JSC "Atomenergoproekt" — the engineering structure of the Rosatom State Corporation.

The new power unit will be equipped with a BN-1200M reactor with a capacity of 1250 MW — a fourth-generation installation that meets the most modern safety standards. According to the project, the unit will be able to operate for at least 60 years, with a possible extension to 80. Its launch is scheduled for 2034, and electricity generation will be more than 20 billion kWh per year — twice as much as the entire city of Yekaterinburg consumes.

The construction is included in the general scheme for the placement of electricity facilities until 2042. The scale of the construction is impressive: about 9,000 people will be involved, over 1.5 million cubic meters of soil will have to be removed, part of the forest will be cut down, and temporary infrastructure will be erected. Earthworks will begin by the end of the summer.

Earlier, www1.ru reported that Rosatom will begin preparing for the construction of a new power unit at the Beloyarsk NPP with a BN-1200M reactor.
