On the night of April 23, Russians will be able to observe the peak of the Lyrid meteor shower. Favorable conditions for observing "falling stars" will persist from Tuesday evening until dawn. This was reported in the Moscow Planetarium.
In 2025, the conditions for observing meteors are favorable. On April 21, the Moon enters the phase of the last quarter and will not interfere with the observation of meteors. Under such conditions, from evening and all night until dawn, with a clear sky, you can observe bright Lyrid meteors. They can be seen with the naked eye.
The predicted frequency of flashes in the sky is 18 meteors per hour. An increased number of "falling stars" can be expected between April 21 and April 24.
When searching for meteors, you need to focus on the eastern horizon, the landmark is the star Vega, the constellation Lyra. The radiant is located slightly to the right of Vega. You need to look at the area of the sky between the horizon and this star.
No special instruments are required for observation - just a clear sky and patience. The area of meteor departure around midnight will be located not high above the eastern horizon, and by 5-6 am will rise higher above the southern horizon.
Lyrids are one of the oldest meteor showers known on Earth, which today is considered a medium-strength shower. It is formed by the comet C/1861 G1 Thatcher. Every year the Earth passes through a plume of particles left by this comet, and when they burn in the atmosphere, they create bright flashes - meteors. The name of the stream comes from the constellation Lyra, where the area from which these flashes appear (radiant) is located.
