Russian Howitzers Acquire "Eyes": Innovation Makes Artillery High-Precision

The Orlan-30 reconnaissance UAV allows detecting artillery positions by flashes of fire and thermal traces

Russian artillery has become much more adaptive and technologically advanced thanks to the introduction of reconnaissance drones in conjunction with guns. The army has transformed its tactics, incorporating elements characteristic of modern combat operations.

One of the key elements is the long-range Orlan drone, capable of detecting artillery positions by thermal traces and flashes of shots.

Especially noteworthy is the Orlan-30 version, equipped with a laser designator, allowing it to guide 152-mm guided projectiles of the Krasnopol type directly to the identified targets.

Artillery systems work in direct conjunction with drones, receiving target designation from them in real time. This may mean the emergence of a new format of counter-battery combat, in which single guns can independently identify and engage targets, acting autonomously and quickly.

Main advantages of Orlan-30:

Reliability — durable design and secure communication channels, speed + efficiency — up to 150 km/h with loitering mode, accuracy — the error in target coordinates is minimized, laser illumination — for working with high-precision ammunition, versatility — flights at altitudes from 300 to 3500 meters.
