The filter effectively purifies water, absorbing toxic substances and heavy metals

Engineers at Novosibirsk State Technical University (NSTU) have developed an innovative water filter that can be used in the field. This filter uses 3D printing technology and includes a filter element based on a biogel that effectively purifies water drawn from any source.

A special feature of the development is the use of chitosan-based biogel, a substance extracted from crab shells. Chitosan has a high sorption capacity and effectively absorbs heavy metals, toxic protein molecules, and unpleasant odors, making it suitable for water purification.

The simplified design of the filter allows its length to be increased to 68 mm, which makes it possible to use more filtering substance. The structural strength was also increased by increasing the distance between the grids, and a plug was added on top to simplify the operation process.

The filter was printed on a 3D printer using food-grade plastic, which confirms its safety for use with drinking water. Tests have shown that the filter is airtight and can be used repeatedly by changing the bag with the filtering substance. The biogel bag is designed to filter up to five liters of water and is additionally equipped with a carbon filter to improve purification.

This filter is planned to be used in the field, including in combat zones, where access to clean water is limited. The new development is of great importance for ensuring safety and convenience in conditions where rapid and effective water filtration is needed.
