Россиян предупредили о новом способе мошенничества с телефонными кодами

Attackers are trying to convince victims to change the regional code in their home phone number

Scammers have started using a new tactic, convincing their victims of the need to change the regional code in their home phone number. This was reported by the Moscow City Prosecutor's Office.

An 82-year-old Moscow resident became a victim of such a scam. The scammers informed him that the city was replacing the area code for city numbers from 499 to 495, and offered to install the necessary equipment at a discount. The elderly man provided them with his passport details and, at the request of the scammers, said the phrase "I have no objection to changing the number."

The next day, the man received calls from people who introduced themselves as employees of the bank's security service and the FSB. They informed him that an illegal transfer had been made in his name, and asked the pensioner to help in the search for the attackers.

At the direction of telephone scammers, the man withdrew money from his account, packed it in a bag and, after saying the code word, handed over the cash to the arriving courier. In return for the savings, the victim received from the courier allegedly bank documents made in a photo editor.

Earlier, the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs warned Russians about a new type of fraud. Attackers offer assistance to those who have already encountered fraudsters. They operate in chats where people share their experiences and stories about how they lost money. Scammers promise to return the lost funds, while promising their services.
