Rosoboronexport has published a video of new tests of the "Arena-M" active protection system (APS) for tanks. This system is installed on T-90M "Proryv" tanks.
In the video, the APS repels an attack by two anti-tank missiles, flying from the front and from above at an angle.
While intercepting missiles moving parallel to the ground has long been known, combating a threat flying from above is something new. American Javelin ATGMs and FPV drones attack from the upper hemisphere.
The ability to shoot down targets flying from above potentially suggests the possibility of intercepting strike drones, but this still needs confirmation, noted the authors of the Telegram channel «Военный осведомитель».
The "Arena-M" APS includes a radar station (RLS) with high noise immunity, an onboard computer, and special ammunition installed in shafts around the perimeter of the tank's turret.
The radar detects a projectile, anti-tank missile, or ammunition directed at the tank, calculates their trajectory, and fires a protective projectile that destroys the target in flight with a beam of damaging elements.
