The studied class of nitrogen-free substances has a high explosive power index

Specialists at Skoltech have discovered over 200 new compounds — oxocarbonates. This research may change the approach to creating TNT and rocket fuel in the future.

Skoltech scientists have found that oxocarbons release carbon dioxide during decomposition and have an explosive power comparable to TNT.

This class of substances is of interest for space research, battery technologies, biochemistry, and for the development of industrial explosives and rocket fuel. Some of the discovered substances will release more than 75% of TNT's explosive energy upon decomposition.

Researchers identified 224 oxocarbons, of which 32 compounds were suitable for synthesis and application. One of the identified molecules, C4O9, was 81% comparable to TNT in explosive power. Further research may contribute to the development of nitrogen-free explosives and rocket fuel.
