Злоумышленники подменяют QR-коды на электросамокатах для кражи данных

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia warns citizens about a new fraudulent scheme related to the rental of electric scooters and bicycles. Attackers stick fake QR codes on transport to steal users' personal data.

This type of cyberattack is called qishing - a type of phishing in which QR codes are used instead of links in emails or messages. After scanning them, the victim is taken to a fraudulent website where they can enter bank card details or transmit other confidential information to attackers.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs notes that cases of qishing in the field of transport rental have been recorded before, but with the onset of the rental season, fraudsters are likely to become more active. In this regard, the Bank of Russia has developed recommendations for companies using QR codes to reduce the risks of such attacks.

When renting electric scooters and bicycles, citizens are advised to check QR codes for traces of re-gluing or damage, and also use official rental service applications.
