Units on the line of combat contact (LCC) are successfully using the Soviet self-propelled mortar 2S4 "Tulip". The system is designed to destroy fortifications, eliminate equipment and enemy manpower, and is the only self-propelled gun with a 240 mm mortar gun in the world.
Serial production of the "Tulip" started in 1974. The chassis of the self-propelled gun is based on the GMZ tracked mine layer, and the power plant is a V-59 diesel engine with a capacity of 520 hp.
The 2B8 mortar is located on the roof of the vehicle's hull and rests with a plate on the ground in the firing position. Loading is breech-loading, and the aiming drive is electro-hydraulic. The ammunition is located in two drum installations inside the hull with a capacity of 20 mines each.
The ammunition includes rounds with active-rocket and high-explosive fragmentation mines, as well as guided mines from the "Smelchak" corrected artillery weapon system. A 7.62-mm PKT machine gun is installed on the commander's turret.
