The construction of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant is ongoing in Mersin Province, Turkey. Workers have installed the second tier of the inner containment shell of the reactor building at power unit No. 4. This was reported by the Rosatom press service.
Each block is formed from prestressed reinforced concrete, which ensures special strength and seismic resistance of the entire structure.
Prestressed reinforced concrete, also known as prestressed concrete, is a material in the production of which an initial calculated compressive stress is artificially embedded in the concrete. It is used for interfloor ceilings of multi-story buildings and shells of nuclear reactors.
The containment shell ensures radiation safety in the event of accidents at nuclear power plants. It prevents the release of hazardous substances into the environment. The reactor itself and the equipment of the primary circuit are located inside the shell.
