On Sunday morning, December 29, a powerful flare occurred on the Sun, reaching class X. This was reported by Sergei Bogachev, head of the Solar Astronomy Laboratory at the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IKI RAN).
According to him, the event began at 10:08 Moscow time. The peak radiation was recorded at 10:18, and the explosive phase lasted more than half an hour.
Solar activity has been increasing for about a week, but a powerful flare has only occurred now. The preliminary score of the event is X1.1.
Bogachev clarified that the explosion occurred in an area of possible impact on Earth. Moderate magnetic storms are likely from December 31 to January 1.
