Water purifier from crab shells: New filter developed in Novosibirsk

The development is based on the substance chitosan

An innovative water purifier based on chitosan, a substance derived from crab shells, has been developed at Novosibirsk State Technical University (NSTU). This was reported by the university's press service.

Two types of biogels based on modified chitosan were selected, and we tested them: we took water from an ordinary puddle, purified it, and sent it for analysis. The water showed compliance with SanPiN standards, that is, suitability for drinking.

The water purifier is a bag with a biogel that has a mesh structure, resembling a tea bag. It consists of a layer of carbon filter, one type of gel, a carbon layer, a second type of gel, and another carbon layer.

The bag is placed inside a filter cartridge on the neck of the bottle and closed with a lid, which is modified to fit the size of the neck using additional modules. One bag is designed to purify 5 liters of water.

Earlier www1.ru reported that in Russia they created a membrane for cleaning used motor oils.
