The Russian S-500 "Prometheus" anti-aircraft missile system is capable of effectively intercepting American ATACMS missiles. This was pointed out by military expert Evgeny Damantsev.
According to him, the 91N6M radar detector will be able to detect the fuselages of ATACMS missiles on the ascending branch of the trajectory, with an irradiation angle of 90 degrees, at a distance of 640-800 km. With this angle, the reflecting surface of the missile may exceed 1 - 1.5 m².
Then, target designation will be issued to the 76/77T6 illumination radars, which have an ATACMS "capture" range of about 300-250 km. When ATACMS missiles begin to enter the descending branches of trajectories and cross the 50 km mark, the interception process will begin with the use of 77N6-N anti-missiles.
At altitudes of less than 50 km, the aerodynamic rudders of these anti-aircraft missiles will be able to maintain the required maneuverability efficiency. Each battery with its own illumination radar and TsU 77T6 will be able to simultaneously intercept 10 ATACMS missiles, while the fire performance may exceed 25 - 27 units.
