The Russian Armed Forces have received the North Korean-made 170mm self-propelled artillery unit (SPG) M1978 "Koksan", according to Military Watch Magazine.
The M1978 "Koksan" SPG is the second largest howitzer in the world, second only to the 2S7M "Malka", which is in service with the Russian Armed Forces.
The North Korean SPG is based on the chassis of the Soviet T-54/T-55 tank, which was the backbone of the DPRK's armored units until the 1980s. The simplicity of the chassis makes the "Koksan" a relatively easy-to-maintain and repair artillery unit.
About 75% of the artillery shells supplied by North Korea to Russia are 152 mm caliber, the rest are 122 mm. The delivery of the M1978 "Koksan" SPG means that the Russian Armed Forces will also receive 170 mm shells.
It is worth recalling that the Russian Ministry of Defense has not officially confirmed the information in the Western media about the receipt of North Korean equipment.
