Scientists recorded a giant solar prominence on the Sun

The eruption that occurred on October 14 became one of the most impressive of the current solar cycle

Scientists have recorded and filmed the eruption of a giant prominence from the western edge of the Sun on October 14, 2024, according to the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

A prominence is a huge cloud of gas and plasma ejected from the solar atmosphere, which can reach large sizes and be located above the solar surface.

The footage received from the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences captured the destabilized movement of an exceptionally large prominence, which was observed in an optimal lateral projection on the edge of the solar disk, south of the equator.

Scientists noted that it is unclear what exactly triggered this event, as no flares were recorded on the visible side of the Sun that could be associated with it. However, according to observations, this prominence has become one of the most impressive of the current solar cycle.

Prominences are among the most spectacular solar phenomena, and some of them, such as the "Granddaddy" prominence observed in June 1946, have received their names.
